Consider replacing buttons that are hard to fasten with mittens on or just add to the top of a row of buttons for more coverage.

The bottom line
Hooks & eyes come with four sets of hooks and eyes.
1. Place the hook along the inside of the fabric desired to be fastened, with the hook part close to the fabric edge
2. Using the metal loops, sew the hook in place, making sure that all edges are tightly fastened to the fabric
3. Place the eye along the inside of the fabric, opposite of the hook
4. Using the four metal loops, sew the eye in place, making sure that all edges are tightly fastened to the fabric
5. Once finished, join or separate the hook and eye pieces to fasten or unfasten the fabric
